Our Story

New England Surface Maintenance (NESM) was founded in 1989 by Jim Doyle and Ken Furtney on a simple belief: do quality work, treat people right, and always stand behind it.

At the time, many environmental contractors focused mainly on large commercial accounts. Jim and Ken saw an opportunity to serve homeowners, schools, municipalities, and businesses who needed the same level of expertise, whether it was asbestos in a basement, mold after a leak, or a sensitive remediation project inside an occupied building.

Over the next three decades, NESM became one of Massachusetts’ most trusted environmental services partners. The company built lasting relationships through safety, honest communication, regulatory know-how, and quality workmanship. It’s the kind of track record that keeps customers calling back for decades.

NESM has always believed in partnership over salesmanship. In 2025, after more than 35 years of ownership, Jim and Ken made the decision to transition the business. They weren’t just looking for a buyer; they were looking for someone who shared the values they’d spent three decades building. That search led them to Scott McKenna, who purchased NESM with a deep respect for its history and a commitment to protecting the reputation customers have come to trust.

Scott was drawn to NESM for the same reasons customers keep coming back: its people, its reputation, and its commitment to doing things the right way. Today, the goal is simple: protect what makes NESM special and build on it. That means continuing to invest in employees, training, safety, and customer experience, while strengthening partnerships and expanding NESM’s ability to serve communities across Massachusetts.
